What are the different types of decking?
Timber is one of the most popular decking materials, especially hardwood timbers, which are durable and have a great look and feel. Composite materials, which combine plastic with timber chips or sawdust are also available, and are priced competitively to hardwoods.
Hardwood timber will need to be sanded and stained periodically, but overall it is very durable. Depending on where you live and what size/height your decking is, you could need council approval. Your local decking installer or builder can help you take care of this.
Composite decking
Composite decking is a relative newcomer to the scene, using a combination of recycled plastic and reclaimed timber which actually looks just like real timber. On the plus side composite decking needs very little maintenance, though it does feel a little different underfoot. It is also not affected by termites or water, so is perfect for areas with this pest or for around swimming pools.
Timber decking
Timber is by far the most popular material for making a deck, especially hardwood timber which is dense and durable. Northern box, merbau, spotted gum and blackbutt are all popular timbers used in decking. You can use a treated softwood like pine, which is cheaper, but is generally not going to last as long. Timber decking does need to be sanded and re-oiled periodically otherwise it is prone to dry out, crack and split.
Sealing & finishing
Sealing and finishing your timber decking is crucial to protecting it from the harsh Australian climate. Without proper protection, your decking can quickly deteriorate, leading to rot, fading, and other damage. To ensure the longevity of your decking, it's recommended to seal and finish it with a protective coating. There are many different products available, including oils, stains, and paints.
Construction
There are a number of steps to the construction of a deck. The first thing you need is a design. This will allow a local deck builder to quote your job. You may also need to submit it to your local council for approval. Councils typically set the maximum height and size of your decking, as well as its location in relation to your property boundary and other structures. They may also require the use of specific materials or construction methods to ensure the safety and structural integrity of your deck. Corner footing posts are then laid using concrete, followed by the external frame, cross joists and then the decking surface or timbers.
