Find a cement renderer the easy way
What are the different types of rendering?
In home improvement, rendering refers to the process of applying a mixture such as cement, lime, or acrylic to exterior walls. This process protects the walls from erosion, cracking, and other damage, helping to avoid costly maintenance or repairs in the future.
It can also be used on fences and retaining walls. With plenty of colours and textures, rendering can also help add instant curb appeal to your property.
You’ll need to choose between three main types of rendering, and your licensed tradie will be able to help you make the right choice for your home.
Acrylic render
As the name suggests, acrylic render is any render that uses acrylic, a kind of plastic, in the mixture. Although cement is still the standard choice for rendering, acrylic rendering is gaining popularity thanks to its many benefits.
The main benefit is that it is much more flexible than traditional render mixes, allowing it to be applied to a wide range of surfaces while maintaining its strength. The flexibility of acrylic render also reduces the risk of cracking after application, especially if applied to a surface prone to thermal expansion.
Some other advantages of acrylic render include its excellent adhesion to a range of surfaces, easy application, ability to create different finishes, and fast drying time. Acrylic render also allows for better home ventilation and is resistant to bacteria and fungi.
The downside? It’s usually more expensive than traditional cement render due to the composition and materials needed to make it.
Cement render
Cement or concrete render, is a cost-effective and attractive exterior finish made up of three main components: lime, sand, and cement. It’s the most popular choice for external rendering in Australia.
The lime helps prevent cracking, while the type of sand used can affect the final product’s texture. The colour of the render also depends on the type of cement used.
While cement render is easy to use and apply, it’s not 100% waterproof and can crack over time, unlike acrylic render, which is less prone to this. So, although it might be tempting to DIY the application, using a professional concrete renderer is always recommended for the best outcomes.
Bagging
Bagging is an alternative to rendering that leaves the brickwork with a textured, rustic appearance. Unlike rendering, bagging doesn’t conceal the bricks underneath. Instead, it leaves the contours and bumps visible.
The final finish is determined by the application technique, such as wet bagging for a washed look or dry bagging for a heavier textured finish. Bagging allows for far more creativity than rendering. Are you dreaming of a Mediterranean look? Bagging might be the answer. Want to add extra colour and texture? Again, bagging could be the best solution.
Bagging can be less expensive than rendering, but the choice between the two ultimately comes down to personal preference. Some people prefer the cleaner, more uniform look of a professional rendering job, while others prefer the rustic, textured look of bagging.
Internal walls
If it’s the walls inside the house you’re thinking about, you’ll need to find a plasterer, not a renderer - search our directory to find a plasterer near you.
