Formwork can be defined as the mould that the concrete is poured into and allows it to set into place. The formwork can be temporary (removed once the concrete is fully set) or permanent (it stays in place). Formwork can be made from timber, steel, plywood, or it can be Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs).

The formwork is erected before any concrete pouring begins and it is necessary for most concrete projects, such as paths, driveways, slabs, walls, and so on. It needs to be erected by a professional as it is imperative that the formwork is strong enough to take the pressure of the concrete.

It can also be done by a carpenter, formwork carpenter or another professional that understands the inherent issues in working with formwork. Ensure that the professional is fully licensed and experienced, and holds any necessary insurance. Your builder will usually arrange for the formwork to be done and in that case the costs will be included in the contract but if it is a smaller job where you are dealing with the professional directly, always get a detailed quote and timeline for the work.
