How does pool fencing work?
In Australia, all residential pools must be surrounded by fencing that meets Australian Standard AS 1926.1-2012 Swimming Pool Safety, which outlines the design and dimensions required to make your pool area safe. Along with the 1.2m height requirement, pool fencing must not be able to be climbed by children. This is designed to keep children out of the pool area when they are unsupervised by an adult. Glass, stainless steel and aluminium are the most popular materials for pool fencing in Australia.
Installation
Pool fencing installation can be carried out by a variety of trades, including fencers, builders and glaziers. It is generally quoted on a lineal or linear metre basis, with labour on top, and will have to be ordered after measurement. Installation should not take more than a few days for metal fencing. Glass fencing may take a little longer to install.
Glass pool fencing
Glass pool fencing is popular because it gives you uninterrupted views of your pool. There are three types: semi frameless, pin fixed frameless and frameless, with the price increasing correspondingly. Frameless glass panels are installed in a channel for a seamless look, while the semi-frameless options use stainless steel or aluminium pins or supports where the glass is attached.
Metal pool fencing
Metal pool fencing is normally manufactured from stainless steel, which is treated against corrosion, or aluminium which is naturally corrosion resistant. Expect to pay more for aluminium. Either way the gaps between the vertical members cannot be greater than 100mm. This is to prevent children slipping through the fence.
