Fencing Options and Types
Last Updated Jul 20, 2023 · Written by Craig Gibson · 8 min read
Fencing is necessary in most homes to keep in animals, keep out unwanted visitors, for safety or even just for aesthetics. But that are your options? Read on to find out.
Brick Fencing
Brick fences can look extremely stylish when well built, and they will last for a very long time too. There are a range of colours available in bricks so you will always be able to find something that complements your home’s colour scheme well. You can opt to have a solid brick fence or you can combine bricks with other materials depending on the look that you are after.
Picket Fences
The picket fence is a fence that ismost commonly used to define boundaries. Evenly spaced vertical boards called pickets are used and these have a tapered or pointed top. The fence can be installed using prefabricated sections that simply attach to the fence posts or you can build the entire fence in situ. Picket fences can be painted any colour but they are most commonly white.
Glass Fencing
Glass fencing is an excellent option as it provides a very clean look and does not obscure your view. It is currently most popular as a form of pool fencing but you can use glass as part of your regular fencing as well. Set glass panels in brick, concrete or stone for a classic yet contemporary look. However, ensure that the glass is reinforced for safety.
Pool Fencing
Pool fencing needs to be strong and secure above all else. The most popular options as far as materials go are glass, steel, or aluminium, but you can use anything as long as it meets the Australian Pool Fence Standards and your local council regulations. Pool fences need to be at least 1.2m tall and there are strict limits on how wide the gaps can be between the palings. Gates need to be self locking.
PVC Fencing
PVC fencing has the advantage of being extremely low maintenance – once installed you practically never have to think about it again, except for the occasional clean. From a distance, PVC looks like standard wood, but they do not have any of the problem
s of wood such as splintering, warping, termites, etc. They are generally available in light colours and stand up very well under UV rays from the sun.
Temporary Fencing
Temporary fencing is usually hired when it is needed. It is used for a short period of time and by its very nature, it is designed to be portable. Some uses for temporary fencing include fencing off building or renovating site or for security. It is available in a range of styles.
Brush Fencing
Brush fencing is made from a native Melaleuca bush and it is a very natural style of fencing. Brush fencing panels can be made by hand or machine made. They are fi
xed to a frame or installed on a concrete base, depending on the installation method. You can even use brush fencing to clad your existing fence. Even though they are made from natural materials, brush fences are resistant to white ants and are an excellent wind and noise break.
Security Fencing
Security fencing keeps your home safe from intruders. Its aim is to give the residents of the home protection. The most common security fencing materials are steel and concrete. There are a range of design options available – just because it is a security fence does not mean that it cannot look good. Different colours are available and you can get security fencing custom made.
Electric Fences
Electric fences are wire fences that have an electric current running through. These are generally intended to be utilitarian moreso than have aesthetic appeal. Electric fences are commonly used to keep livestock in, or to keep things out of an area.
Rural Fencing
Rural fencing is often used to keep animals in and it is generally a timber or PVC fence with one, two, or three rails. Chain link fencing and steel wire are other options for rural fencing.
Wrought Iron Fencing
Wrought iron fencing is a traditional or heritage style of fencing that is very elegant. Literally hundreds of different designs are available. Wrought iron is very durable and requires little maintenance but it is one of the most expensive types of fences that you can install. It is the strongest of all the metal fences. You can use wrought iron on its own or in conjunction with other materials such as brick, stone, concrete and so on.
Wire Fencing
There is a wide range of wire based fencing available to give distinct looks in your garden. The wire is either galvanised or powder coated. Wire fencing is weatherproof, rust resistant, durable, and easy to install.
Garden Fencing
Fencing is an important element in any garden design. Not only does it provide security and privacy, it is also a strong visual feature. Use garden fencing on the boundaries of your property, to define garden beds, to separate varying areas of the garden, or to create or frame a feature. If you are using fencing in the garden itself, keep it low and ensure that you can see through it. This will provide definition without making you feel like you are closed in. Garden fencing options include steel, wrought iron, bamboo, brush, timber, brick, etc, etc. Most fencing options will work.
Steel and Aluminium Fencing
Steel and aluminium fencing is very strong, and in the case of aluminium, it is also lightweight. Common steel or aluminium fencing includes steel pickets, Colorbond, tubular steel, large panels or louvres. As it is generally powder coated for protection, steel and aluminium fencing is available in a wide range of colours. Maintenance is low but you do have to check for scratches or marks in order to prevent rust and corrosion from becoming a problem. As far as design options go, your choices are virtually limitless.
Timber Fencing
Timber fencing is very popular as it is both affordable and durable. Softwoods are more resistant to rot but timber can also be treated against rot, termites, insects, and the elements so that it lasts longer. You can choose to paint, stain, or oil the timber, or you can leave it to age naturally, depending on the look that you are going for. It's a good idea to consult a professional fence painter when it comes to painting and sealing your timber fence.
Concrete Fencing
Concrete fencing, as the name suggests, is made primarily from concrete. This concrete can be poured on site or it can be precast offsite and installed. Concrete is more environmentally friendly than some other fencing options, and is very low maintenance, and has no issues with pests. It is excellent in bushfire prone areas. Concrete fencing is also very versatile – it can be formed to look like many other materials such as timber, stone, and brick, and it is available in many different colours.
Bamboo Fencing
Bamboo fencing is an eco friendly fencing option as bamboo is a sustainable material. It is also unique as each stick of bamboo is different, giving a very natural and organic look to the fence. Bamboo is budget friendly and it is good in high wind areas as it will flex rather than break.
Fence Panels
As the name suggests, fence panels are large panels that are screwed onto supporting posts in order to create a fence. These are great as installation is quick and easy, and there is less disruption to you as most of the work is done off site. Fence panels can be made out of a number of materials such as steel and concrete. You can even get pre-made timber picket fences in panels that are then joined together. For a classic example of the fence panel, look at the standard Colorbond fence that surrounds so many homes.
No matter which fencing you choose, it can be a wise investment to consult a general contractor for advice and to build your new fence.
