Floor sanding and polishing can transform your old timber floor and help reveal the original character of the wood. Timber floor sanding can help you revive and transform dull and dusty flooring into a stunning showcase for your home. If you do not adequately prepare your floor surface any imperfections will be visible when you come to polish, stain or seal it. Sanding is automated via the use of a sanding machine, typically a hand operated unit which accepts varying degrees of sand paper grit.

Before you start your floor project ensure you take time to prepare it first:

• ensure the timber floor is free of dirt, dust and old polish before beginning work by sweeping and vacuuming the area thoroughly
• remove all nail or ensure that they are flush so as not to damage the sanding machine
• old polish will need to be removed with a rag and mineral turpentine

Sanding takes place with progressively finer grade papers. The first step is to rough sand the old floor to remove any dirt, old finish, or marks from the surface. This is followed by a medium sand, which basically smooths the abrasions of the rough sand away. Fine grit sandpaper then finishes the job before buffing takes place with a rotary type machine. The floor can then be cleaned and vacuumed ready for staining or sealing.
