Gas repairs must be carried out by licensed technicians, who are regulated by local state and federal laws. This is to ensure the continued safety of the general public around this potentially combustible substance. There are two types of commercially available gas:

• natural gas, which is typically piped to homes and which is efficient and safe; and
• liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) which is heavier and more volatile, and found in the ubiquitous gas cylinder

Chemical odorants are added to both types of gas to provide a way of detecting if there is a leak. Follow these safety guidelines if you have gas in your home:

• only use the services of an accredited and licensed technician
• if you suspect a gas leak shut off all appliances and call the emergency services immediately
• all appliances, meters and cylinders should be serviced regularly
• ensure that all gas appliances burn a blue flame when lit
• educate your family to the dangers of gas, including the fact that all appliances should be turned off after use
• if you are purchasing an appliance, look for certification from the Standards Australia International (SAI) or the Australian Gas Association (AGA)
