“Jaryd and his team have just completed our new home at Midway Point and we could not recommend him more highly. The work progressed well even under these difficult conditions of trade and material shortages. The workmanship and finishes are of a very high standard. Jaryd was extremely flexible with some extras and amendments we requested along the way and always made us feel that nothing was a problem. And as well as all this, his price was very competitive and our extras bill was more than fair. We can barely believe that everything has gone along so perfectly the entire build. We will not hesitate to engage him again for any additional works we might undertake and recommend him wholeheartedly.“

Find a retaining wall builder the easy way
What are common types of retaining walls?
Retaining walls are designed to help hold back soil or stabilise uneven ground, or where there is a slope. In a garden or backyard they can help make a steep area usable, by providing you with tiered levels that can be a feature.
When building a retaining wall you need to factor in materials, drainage, foundations and the overall aesthetic or look and feel and if it fits into your home’s design.
Depending where you live, there are regulations covering construction, with the height the determining factor. This is when you will need a licensed builder and/or engineering drawings to get started.
Concrete retaining walls
Concrete blocks or sleepers are a popular option for a retaining wall as they are extremely durable, meeting 60-year design life detailed in the Australian Standard AS4678 which covers earth-retaining structures. If you are using concrete blocks, these give you greater flexibility if the ground is uneven or if you want to curve the design. You will need a licensed builder and/or an engineer to create the design brief, as well as sign off from the council for your project.
Timber retaining walls
Timber retaining walls are perfect for smaller projects where not a lot of earth needs to be held in place. They are also cost effective and give your outdoors that organic look and feel.
On the flip-side timber is susceptible to rot and termite activity, and some councils will not allow timber to be used for a wall that is on the boundary of a property. Softer timbers like pine will need to be treated to ensure it lasts longer in a retaining wall, though items like recycled hardwood timber sleepers are very durable.
Stone retaining walls
If you want a retaining wall with the unique look and feel of natural stone you are looking at sandstone blocks or a similar material. The result is one which is easy on the eye and extremely durable, though it does have limitations in terms of the height you can reach. In this case you could install a gabion retaining wall, which uses stone in a steel/mesh cage. These can be built higher, though are also labour intensive. Installation may also require a stone mason or landscaper experienced doing this type of work, and you will also need to factor in delivery costs to your project.
Material suppliers
Looking for retaining wall supplies? Then you need to find a local supplier, who will stock items such as stone and concrete blocks, retaining wall caps, garden wall blocks and drainage products. These items will be priced on a unit basis, so you will need to know the area/dimensions of your wall to get the right amount of materials. A dedicated builder or landscaper can help you work this out, based on the designs of your job.
