How much does a fibreglass spa cost?

A spa can be a one person spa or hold up to six people. The price of the spa will depend on its size. Some typical costs* for spas may be:

  • $5000 for a single person spa

  • $6000 for a two person spa

These prices are approximate and will depend on who supplies the spa. Note how a smaller spa is only $2000 less than a four person spa. Family spas can be even a better deal, with some spas costing only $7000 to $8500 for a six person spa.

Night Pool

Swim spas are also available. They are just long enough to swim in, but have jets so a swimmer can swim in place. A swim spa can cost between $21,000 and $28,000, but can fit into a small backyard or even installed indoors. A swim spa can be  great way to stay in shape and when it's not being used as a swim spa, it can be used for relaxation.

These are costs for fibreglass spas without additional parts. Some parts costs include:

  • Spa jets can cost between $14 and $40 depending on the type of jet you need

  • Swim jets can cost up to $150

  • Spa heaters can cost between $200 and $400 depending on the size of your spa

  • Spa filters range in price from $13 to $75

  • An ozone or UV system for purifying spa water can cost between $150 and $480

  • Spa plumbing parts can cost between $3 for a single part to $75 for a diverter

An electrician may be needed to install the heater and electricity for the spa jets. For more information about the cost of an electrician, read How Much do Electricians Charge. The article will give you information about their costs, but you may need to get quotes from electricians to find out how much having the heater, jets and other electrical components for a spa will cost.

How much does a concrete spa cost?

Concrete spa costs will depend on the amount of excavation needed and the difficulty or ease of accessing the site. If you are installing a pool and a spa, the cost of the spa may be around $14,000, but if you are installing a concrete spa only, the cost could be much higher because installing a spa with a pool will require less excavation work.

Concrete Spa

The typical price of a spa or pool can be $1450 per linear metre. A spa is smaller than a pool, but can typically be at least two metres wide and at least two or three metres long. A plunge pool with dimensions of 5m X 3m can cost roughly $23,000. The cost may include excavation, but may not include the cost of a heater, or interior finish. The cost of a heater may be between $3000 for an energy efficient heat pump and $4500 for a solar heater. An interior finish may cost between $1000 and $2000.

What other spa options are available?

Fibreglass and concrete spas aren't your only options. The least expensive spa is an inflatable spa, which is made of durable PVC and as the name implies, it is inflatable, The cost of an inflatable spa may be:

  • Between $900 and $1400 for a two seater

  • Between $900 and $1200 for a four seater

  • Between $1250 and $1800 for a six seater

Prices for inflatable spas don't vary much because they are made from PVC and the cost difference between a two seater and a six seater isn't significant.

Portable Jacuzzi

You will also need accessories for an inflatable spa. They might include a heater, which can cost around $400 and you won't want to blow an inflatable spa up with your mouth. An inflator can cost around $45 and is a good investment because you may want to move your inflatable spa later.

Another option is a western red cedar spa. They range in price from:

  • $4300 for a Japanese style spa

  • $5900 for a two person spa (1500mm diameter X 900mm high)

  • $7200 for an 1800mm diameter X 900mm high spa

These prices don't include heaters, spa jets and other accessories. Shipping charges may also apply if you don't live near the outlet.

Choosing a spa

Any type of spa can be relaxing and you don't have to choose the most expensive spa. If your budget is tight, an inflatable spa can be perfect. With its soft sides, it can be deeply relaxing. A heater is always a good idea because the heater makes  a spa even more relaxing.

If you have a swim spa, turn the heat down or even off before you swim. Swimming will invigorate you and you don't need a hot spa. After you've finished your swim, you can turn the heat up and come back later to relax.

Hot Tub

Fibreglass spas may need a surround because the exterior fibreglass may not be attractive. Western red cedar may be a good choice because it looks attractive and can be easily installed. You may have a more permanent place for your spa, so think about bricking it in or use stones to create a beautiful spa.

Also think about a spa cover. It can be anything from an umbrella to a more substantial gazebo. A cover is a good idea because it will shield you from the elements and allow you to relax in the spa.

What other things do you need for a spa?

After you've set up your spa, what other things should you think about? A spa should be a relaxing experience, so you want to avoid harsh lights. Install a dimmer switch or even better, have  a spa by candlelight to set the mood. You may also want to burn incense to have a pleasant smell in the spa.

When you get out of a warm spa, you may feel cold, so having a warm robe nearby will help you stay warm. You may also want slippers nearby so your feet don't get cold on the ground and you won't pick up dirt from the floor.

Soft music may be a good idea while you're in the spa and if you are having a spa alone, you might want to take a good book with you.

Don't forget to stay hydrated. You can drink water, but maybe your favourite herbal tea would be a better idea. Serve it cold and if you want it sweetened, the choice is yours.

Spas should be relaxing unless you are working out in a swim spa. If you're in a spa to relax, think about relaxation and choose things that will help you relax more. As mentioned, soft light, soft music and perhaps incense will make you even more relaxed. An herbal tea can also help you relax. Think about anything that will help you relax.
