Landscape construction is a fundamental part of successful landscape design, especially if significant works are to be undertaken. A new property may be designed from scratch, or an existing property could be renovated. Landscape construction often involves the use of tools and heavy machinery especially if earthworks or excavations are required. Traditional construction techniques such as brickwork, tiling and joinery are also very much part of a successful programme of works.

Buildings, fences, walls, paving, water gardens, swimming pools, and irrigation all require different degrees of landscape development, and will usually be supervised by a project manager. They will be responsible for managing the wide range of tradespersons and contractors that are required for a landscaping project, particularly for large complex projects. This can involve pavers, joiners, garden services, plumbers, painters and tilers, amongst others.

A landscaping contractor will typically offer a range of services for a client. These include, but are not limited to:

• preparing landscape plans
• marking out site boundaries
• identifying which equipment is required
• identifying the location of turf, beds and paths
• identifying which species of plants are suitable for the site
• preparing a risk assessment for the construction site
• identify safe working practices for the site
• managing the various components of the construction phase through to completion and handover, including all the tradespersons involved
