What services do roofers provide?
Many Australians take their roof for granted – it’s only when there’s a problem that we appreciate all it does for us. A properly installed roof should last for decades: Colorbond for 20 or more years, tiles for 50 or more years. However, a roof can be damaged in many ways that can dramatically shorten its lifespan.
If your home’s roof is starting to show wear and tear or, worse, it’s letting in the rain, it might be time to hire a roofer to re-cover your home.
Metal & Colorbond roofing
The sound of rain falling on a metal roof is about as iconic an Australian experience as you can get. Colorbond is the big name in the industry, but there are lots of options in metal roofing.
There are many reasons why Colorbond is popular here: it’s durable, quick to install and very low maintenance. When considering new roofing for your home, it’s a great choice.
Another benefit of Colorbond roofing is its cost – almost half as expensive as tiles and maybe a quarter of the price of a slate roof.
Tiled roofing
There are different options (and price points) for tiled roofing. At the lower end of the scale are concrete tiles. Then you can move up to terracotta tiles and up to slate and solar tiles.
The extra cost brings benefits too. One of these is longevity. Tile roofs can last 50 years with minimal repair – if you install a tile roof today, it may well be there for the rest of your life. Tiles last so long because there’s not much that can damage them. They’re resistant to insects, rot and salty air among other things.
The high durability of tile roofing is worth the extra cost for many.
Bedding & pointing
When we think of roofing, many of us focus on the main covering, but there’s a lot more to it. Bedding and pointing are two important factors in a healthy roof.
To improve your bedding, a professional will need to remove the mortar used to fix tiles in place, clean the roof and lay a new layer.
Pointing is also related to mortar but this is about the finish rather than the installation. It helps make your roof look nicer and prevent leaks when it rains.
Roofing material suppliers
While some roofers may be happy to supply materials themselves, you may find you can get a better deal by shopping around yourself. It can be easier to let the roofer source materials, but they will charge you for the time they take to buy and collect these materials.
Dedicated roofing material suppliers can be found around the country. Speak to your roofer to find out what you need in terms of Colorbond sheets or tiles, plus any accessories, and you may be able to save a bit of money by ordering them yourself.
