Double hung windows

Double glazed windows
Double glazed windows have become extremely popular in recent years. Also known as an insulated glass unit (IGU), double glazed windows combine two glass panes into a single window, separated by a space that’s filled with a still layer of air or gas. While double glazed windows are more expensive to install than single glazed windows, the benefits may make them a wise investment.
Casement windows
Particularly for weatherboard homes and coastal and Hamptons-style properties, more traditional window types are back in vogue. Casement windows, for example, rely on a handle to crank the window open or shut. These windows are hinged on the side, so they open outward to either the left or the right. They offer excellent ventilation, especially in rooms like the kitchen or bathroom, and they are quick and easy for a professional to install.
Awning windows
Similar to a casement window, awning windows are instead hinged at the top and open outwards. Made for openings where the width of the window is greater than its height, awning windows are opened with a cranking mechanism or chain winder that allows you to customise the opening size. Awning windows can be installed anywhere in the house, but they are particularly practical in bathrooms and bedrooms where privacy is required.
Timber windows
A beautiful addition to any property, timber windows can add value to your home while also increasing ventilation and natural light. The beauty of using timber as your main window frame material is that it can complement most architectural styles. Its natural charm is matched by its sturdiness and ability to stand up to the harsh Australian elements. In addition, timber boasts naturally insulative properties so you can enjoy year-round comfort with an energy-efficient window installation.
Window frames
With a wide selection of window types to choose from, you will need to consider the core elements before hiring a window installer. When it comes to the frame, for example, different designs will use different placements for the window’s head, jamb and sill.
There are also various materials to choose from, including timber, aluminium and uPVC. If you want a simple, cost-effective window installation then you can choose a design that is hand operated like a double hung window. Alternatively, you may want a window that is easy to operate, such as a casement or awning window with a hand crank. Make sure you speak to your tradie about the different options when it comes to window frames.
Window glass
Not all window glass is created equal. On the contrary, while a cheaper glass style may have broad applications across various window types, it may not offer the same energy-efficient and noise-reducing properties as other glass. Float glass is a low-cost option for most window designs and is widely used by window installers.
However, you have other options as well. Laminated window glass, for example, is a safety glass that doesn’t shatter into dangerous shards when broken. It’s also a sound insulator and may block UV radiation, which is why it’s a popular choice for skylights. Obscured window glass and double glazed windows are also available, so speak to your window installer about the most appropriate window glass for your needs.
Whole window replacement
There are many reasons why you may need to hire a window installer to carry out a whole window replacement. From seal failures that expose your home to the outside elements, right through to design choices during a renovation – a qualified window installer will be able to completely remove and replace any full-frame window. This type of installation can be extensive and pricey, but it ensures you get a fully sealed window in the style you want.
