What Trades Do You Need for a Bathroom Renovation?

Last Updated Mar 3, 2020 · Written by Rob Schneider · 4 min read

One home renovation that can never be a complete DIY project is a bathroom renovation. Why? Because you will need to hire licensed tradies for much of the work. Let's take a look at the trades you need for a bathroom renovation and why you need to be careful about the DIY jobs you take on.

Licensed Trades for Bathroom Renovations

Three licensed trades will be needed for almost any full bathroom renovation:

  1. You will need to hire a plumber for all your plumbing jobs.
  2. Any electrical work will need to be carried out by a licensed electrician.
  3. A licensed bathroom waterproofer will be needed for your wet areas, especially inside the shower and on the floors.

Other licensed tradies you may need include:

How many of these trades you need will depend on the extent of your bathroom renovation, but at the very least, you will probably need to hire a plumber, an electrician and a waterproofer. You may be able to try DIY tiling, but only do this if you are confident in your abilities and are willing to take the time to do the job well.

Why You Should Hire Bathroom Renovation Specialists

Bathroom renovation specialists have all the trades you need at their disposal, but won't hiring a bathroom renovation specialist cost you more? It could end up costing you less. In any bathroom renovation, the trades need to be scheduled at the right time. If you hire a plumber to install a bathtub, but they are unable to do their job because the tiler or waterproofer hasn't been able to finish their work, the plumber will charge a call-out rate and you'll have to reschedule.

Bathroom renovation specialists have done hundreds of bathrooms and know exactly when to schedule a tradie to come in and do their job. A good service will have expert tilers, plumbers, electricians and other trades they can call on and rely on to come at the right time. Because they know what is required by law, they can help ease you through the council approval process. Try this on your own and you may not get council approval because of details in your plan you overlooked.

How to Save Money on a Bathroom Renovation

The best way to save money on a bathroom renovation is to replace or reface your plumbing fixtures rather than move them to another location. If you're happy with your bath, but feel like you need to replace it because it's worn, chipped and scratched, hire a bath and basin resurfacing expert to make it gleam again.

Your tiles, too, can be cleaned and regrouted or you can have your wall tiles resurfaced. Floor tiles can be resurfaced, but they probably won't wear as well as wall tiles because of the amount of foot traffic a bathroom gets.
