When Do I Need a Demolition Expert?

Last Updated Sep 14, 2018 · Written by Rob Schneider · 3 min read

When you need to have a structure built, you need to hire a licensed builder because they have the training, experience and knowledge to build a structurally sound building. Similarly, you need an expert to do your demolition work. Trying to do it yourself can be extremely dangerous and is probably illegal. You may not need a demolition expert for a very small job, but if you're demolishing anything large enough to pose a danger or that requires a great deal of rubbish removal, you need to hire a demolition expert.

Choosing a Demolition Expert

Because demolition work can be dangerous, demolition experts must carry trade licenses. In most states and territories, they will need one or more of these types of licences:

  • A restricted or unrestricted builder's licence. The person or company you enter into a contract with will need a contractor's licence and the person supervising the work will need a supervisor's licence.
  • A "High Risk Work" licence will be required if a crane or other heavy equipment is needed. In some states, all demolition workers need high risk licences or proof of high risk training.
  • A restricted or unrestricted demolition licence. A "restricted licence" is often restricted to residential and other constructions that are beneath a specified height. In some states, there may be three or more categories of restricted licence.
  • If explosives are needed, the holder of a restricted licence will also need to hold a current "blasting explosives" licence.
  • If asbestos is present, they will need to be licensed to handle and dispose of asbestos.
When you get quotes from demolition experts, their trade licence is the first thing you should check. You also need to be sure they are fully insured, with both indemnity and public liability insurance.

Most demolition contractors you contact will be both licensed and insured. Their level of experience is another factor to consider. Experienced demolition experts work quickly and efficiently. When the work is done, your property will be ready for construction, landscaping or sale.

Ask demolition experts you get quotes from if they offer a discount or rebate for removal of recyclable materials. In some cases, recycled timber, roofing and other materials can be worth a significant amount of money. You may be able to give a demolisher salvage rights in exchange for a discount. If you want to use recyclable materials, you can ask them to stack them on site or deliver them to another site.
