Glass is an integral part of modern buildings, and plays a functional and aesthetic role, insulating and protecting the inhabitants while providing light and access to the outdoors. Glass is required in a number of applications, most obviously in a variety of windows, but also for sliding doors, shower screens, splashbacks and mirrors. Glass supply can be required in a number of instances, including in the construction of a new home or premises. Glass may also need replacing in the case of breakage or vandalism, particularly in commercial properties.

There are many types of glass on the market, each suited to a specific application. These include:

• Sheet – low cost glass, which because of its imperfections, is rarely used in the domestic setting
• Floating – otherwise know as plate glass, the most common type of glass for general use
• Safety – manufactured to break into many small sections with no sharp edges
• Laminate – two or more sheets of glass that are bonded together for decorative or safety applications
• Energy efficient – coated or tinted glass, which limits the amount of thermal penetration but does not restrict the amount of light penetration

If you are having glass installed in your home or premises ensure;

• all products must comply with current Australian Standards relating to glass and glazing
• glass replacement is left to trained and qualified glaziers, who have the experience and appropriate glass handling equipment
